If you would like more information about the ideas behind Herecast, a 39-page report about the project is now available.

Location-aware computing promises to give rise to a new genre of applications--applications that are "smarter" and offer improved usability by customizing their output to the user's location.

This paper will discuss the design of Herecast: an infrastructure to support location-based services using only an 802.11 network. Special emphasis is placed on issues of privacy and ease of deployment. With its community-built location database, Herecast can immediately be deployed anywhere a Wi-Fi network exists. Most importantly, we aim to make it easy for any developer to create their own location-based services, thus eliminating barriers to entry in the field.
